Two parts, one app

Use them separately or together. Every test, lesson and practice session is free.

Part 1

Attention: six short tasks

Each task is short and starts with a brief practice. Do all six in a row (about 15 minutes) or one at a time.

  • Reaction & Alertness: a 3-minute reaction task in the style of the psychomotor vigilance task.
  • Hold Back: tap for every number except 3.
  • Arrow Focus: answer for the middle arrow and ignore the arrows around it.
  • Find the Target: visual search by colour, then by colour and orientation.
  • Connect the Dots: a trail-making style task; part B alternates numbers and dice dots, so no reading is needed.
  • Block Memory: repeat the order in which blocks light up.

You see your own trend over time and your usual range. Published study ranges appear only for measures that phone touch delay barely affects. No IQ, no “attention age”, no percentile, no composite score, no diagnosis.

Optional questions about sleep, alertness and caffeine help you understand your results; they do not change your scores. Five short reading modules cover sleep and alertness, mind-wandering, breaks, a one-minute focus exercise and distractions, including the honest note that “brain training” mainly improves the trained tasks.

Part 2

Faces: a course on expressions

Thirteen short lessons, plus an optional lesson on culture, based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS).

  • Seven expressions, cue by cue: happiness, surprise, fear, sadness, anger, disgust and contempt, with the easily confused pairs side by side.
  • Eye-region cues: the upper-lid raise in fear, lid tension in anger, the cheek raise in smiles, and a lesson with the eyes only.
  • Subtle, brief and micro: low-intensity faces, brief expressions (about 500–200 ms), micro flashes (about 100–33 ms) and expressions masked by a smile.
  • Feedback every time: the key cue and a slow-motion replay after each answer.
  • Daily practice: 20 faces in about 4 minutes, focused on your weakest expressions, with the rest reviewed at growing intervals.
  • Final test: 80 items on faces you have not practised with: full face, eyes only, subtle, and 200 ms and 50 ms flashes. Scores per emotion, corrected for answer habits, and your common mix-ups.
  • Face lab: move each action unit with sliders and flash the face.

What Noticely is not

We would rather you trust the app for the right reasons. Please read this before you start.

Not official
Noticely is an independent educational app. It is not an official institution and is not affiliated with any university or government.
Not medical
Noticely is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition. If you are worried about your attention or wellbeing, talk to a qualified health professional.
Not a lie detector
Research shows that people detect lies only slightly better than chance, real micro-expressions are rare, and micro-expression training has not been shown to improve lie detection.
Can be wrong
Results come from short tasks on a phone and can be wrong. Do not use them to judge, accuse or make decisions about anyone, including yourself.
Phone delay
Phones add a small delay to each tap (about 50–100 ms), so your results are best compared with your own past results.

How the faces are made

The faces in Noticely are real people: actors who posed each expression in a studio, filmed on video. What you see is a real video frame. Weaker and partial versions are blended digitally between two real frames of the same person, along the landmarks of the face.

There are 15 photo sessions with 11 different people: women and men of different ages and backgrounds. A posed expression shows a movement of the face, not a feeling the person had.

Modified: aligned, cropped and colour-matched; weaker, partial and in-between expressions are blended digitally between two real frames of the same person. The actors posed these expressions. Questions and answers

Is Noticely free?

Yes. All tests, lessons, daily practice and the final test are free. One small banner appears on the main lists; you can hide it for 24 hours by watching a short video, or remove it for good with one one-time purchase. There is no subscription.

Is Noticely a lie detector?

No. Research shows that people detect lies only slightly better than chance, real micro-expressions are rare, and micro-expression training has not been shown to improve lie detection. Noticely teaches you to recognise facial movements, not to judge honesty.

Can Noticely diagnose attention problems?

No. Noticely is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition. If you are worried about your attention or wellbeing, talk to a qualified health professional.

Does the app use my camera?

No. Noticely has no camera or microphone access and never reads your face. You look at faces filmed in a studio; nobody looks at yours.

Are the faces real people?

Yes. They are actors filmed while posing each expression (stock videos on Pexels). Weaker and partial versions are blended between two real frames of the same person. The expressions are posed, so they show a movement, not a felt emotion.

Why compare my results only with my own?

Phones add a small delay to each tap, about 50–100 ms, and it differs between devices. Your own past results on the same phone are the fairest comparison.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account. Your results stay on your phone, and in Android backup if you have it turned on.

Who is Noticely for?

For people aged 13 and older who are curious about attention and facial expressions. It is not directed at children.

Is there an iPhone version?

No. Noticely is available for Android on Google Play.

Which languages does Noticely support?

The app is available in 24 languages, with right-to-left layouts for Arabic and Urdu.
